Will tourists have to wait for beach access? Majorca considers giving priority to locals
Will it be tougher to access some of the most popular beaches in Mallorca this Summer? We can’t say for sure that it won’t. The newly formed Citizens’ Assembly for Climate Protection would like residents to have priority access to the beaches over tourists, who would additionally have to buy tickets.
According to the “Majorca Daily Bulletin”, the final document includes 56 different recommendations. Not so long ago, the island’s authorities announced the extension of the ban on alcohol consumption in specific places, but it seems like there is more to come. The assembly claims these changes are meant to relieve some pressure off the most congested areas while at the same time tacking environmental concerns.
So, what was the outcome? About 90 percent of the participants agreed to reduce the number of cruise ships arriving at the ports of Majorca. Plus, allowed ships should remain docked with their engines off for at least 12 hours every day.
Climate advocates also intend to reduce the number of car rentals on the island, striving for a further expansion of bicycle lanes and public transportation services. This would make it much easier and more comfortable for travelers to move around Majorca, even without a car.
Out of all 56 propositions, 32 were supported by more than 90% of the voters. Curiously, the plan of giving residents priority over holidaymakers when accessing the island’s most popular beaches, as well as the requirement to buy an entrance ticket, was not one of them. The idea was supported by “only” 69% of the participants.
For the time being, these figures won’t lead to any major changes when it comes to beach access. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it will not come to fruition in the nearest future, as all ideas that have reached the 50% threshold are to be re-examined throughout the upcoming meetings.
