An Irish television station has been made a laughing stock this week after airing a news segment about the discovery of a “mysterious crater” on Portmarnock Beach… only to realize later that it was merely a hole dug by two pals with buckets and shovels!
The saga began when Dave Kennedy, a self-proclaimed “local astrophysics enthusiast”, stumbled upon what he believed to be a cosmic wonder on the beach. The roughly 1 squared meter circular hole by the waterline caught Kennedy’s attention, leading him to speculate about a “once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event”.
Kennedy’s enthusiasm was fueled further by an angular black rock he found within the hole, pointing out the presence of alleged scorch marks on said rock that could demonstrate its possible flight path and miming an imaginary impact. “I’m not sure of its composition, but we’re definitely going to have to find out” – Kennedy exclaimed.
The now bizarre news segment featured Kennedy walking along the beach, pondering the mysterious discovery, and capturing the excitement of curious onlookers who posed with the enigmatic rock. However, the mystery didn’t last long, and Virgin Media News had to issue an amusing retraction the following day, admitting that they had been deceived. According to Daily Mail, social media footage had emerged of two men digging a hole on Portmarnock Beach, a video that was later broadcast in a follow-up segment where two individuals can be seen with green plastic shovels in hand. Sadly, what had been regarded as a special cosmic event, turned out to be a hole dug out the day before by 2 guys.
Dave Kennedy, the aforementioned astrophysics enthusiast, was left somewhat disappointed by the revelation but remained determined to have his rock analyzed, in the hopes that it wasn’t a completely fruitless discovery. On the other hand, the two men responsible for the “cosmic crater”, Dubliners Charlie Wallace and Peter McEvoy, did not provide any further comments about this ludicrous event.
