Two intoxicated US tourists spend night trapped inside the Eiffel Tower
In a bizarre incident, two American tourists – apparently inebriated – were discovered after spending the night atop the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The two men, who had acquired tickets for an evening visit to the Eiffel Tower on Sunday, found themselves in an unexpected situation. According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the tourists were reportedly trapped inside the monument as a result of excessive alcohol consumption, which helps explain the duo’s clearly impaired judgment.
As the sun rose on Monday, Eiffel Tower security personnel were conducting their routine rounds prior to the monument’s daily opening, when they stumbled upon the two individuals sleeping on the tower’s upper levels. As reported by CNN, the security staff immediately alerted the relevant authorities, marking the start of a very peculiar rescue operation by SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel). The entity responsible for managing and operating the Eiffel Tower took action immediately, and the tourists were swiftly removed from the tower and handed over to the local police.
As a result of the incident, the Eiffel Tower experienced a delayed opening on Monday, as SETE ensured all necessary checks and inspections were carried out to ensure the safety and integrity of the landmark. Despite the circumstances, the institution ended up expressing (at least) a certain level of understanding, acknowledging that the two men posed no immediate threat to the monument or its surroundings, ultimately deciding not to pursue any charges for potential damages caused by trespassing. Even so, charges against the individuals for their unauthorized presence are expected to be filed.
